I was pregnant with brain cancer and how I survived.
My name is Sheryann Buchanan and I found out that I had brain cancer in January 2021. I was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma, a rare type of cancer. I know a lot of you probably never heard of this type of cancer. Hemangiopericytoma, malignant, and grade III. MRI on December 11th, 2020, revealed a tumor, 4.4 x 2.2 cm L temporal lobe contrast-enhancing mass. I also found out that I was three weeks pregnant.
How it all started
Unbearable headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, double vision, noise bleeds, and fatigue daily. I worked in an ICU as a medical social worker and one of my daily responsibilities was participating in multi-disciplinary rounds daily. ICU rounding took an hour or longer daily which caused my symptoms to worsen.

Hemangiopericytoma is an uncommon form of cancer that most people haven’t heard of. It’s a tumor that can be aggressive and unpredictable. I have dedicated myself to raising awareness about this condition so others know they’re not alone in facing rare cancers.
December 2020 brought news that changed my life. An MRI revealed a 4.4 x 2.2 cm tumor in my brain. Just weeks later, I was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma—a rare and aggressive brain cancer. In those early days, I felt a mix of fear, disbelief, and determination. My faith, family, and friends gave me strength, and today I am grateful to be here to share this journey.
As a clinician who leads group sessions for patients with mental health challenges, I’ve found new meaning in my work since my diagnosis. My own battle has made me more committed to helping others heal emotionally and mentally, and I now advocate for a supportive network for all cancer patients.
